FREC Programs

Accounting Aid Society provides tax assistance and other services to promote the economic self-sufficiency of middle to low-income families, seniors and others in need through programs, volunteerism and partnerships.

Accounting Aid Society was established in Detroit in 1972 by accountants who wanted to give back to the community.  Since our founding, we have helped return more than $300 million to individuals and families in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb and Livingston counties, and in turn, into our region’s economy.

Free tax preparation and related services are available by appointment year-round at the FREC for households with income under and $53,000 and individuals with incomes under $35,000.  For more information go to www.accountingaidsociety.org.

Arts & Scraps reimagines recycled materials, inspiring all ages to think, create and learn.  We bring family-friendly activities free of charge to public events at the FREC, thanks to the Ford Motor Company Fund.

Arts & Scraps also operates a community store on Detroit's east side and provides curriculum-based workshops for all ages at our facility or anywhere in Metro Detroit.  Group learning packs based on STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) are sold on our website or at the community store.   Hands on family projects for public or private events to any theme can be facilitated by staff or packed for groups/schools/families to facilitate themselves.

Arts & Scraps believes students should USE the information they learn, not just memorize.  As they have fun, we make learning hands-on, challenging students to invent, build and analyze their thoughts.

The Southwest Detroit Immigrant and Refugee Center (SWIRC), a 501(c)(3) non-profit company, was founded in August 2014 to provide legal services, housing assistance, and business consulting to persons from throughout the Detroit metropolitan area.

Since June 2015 our Free Legal Clinic at the Mercado has helped hundreds with a wide variety of issues at NO COST.  As affordable legal services become increasingly difficult to find in Detroit, SWIRC continues to expand its outreach thanks to dedicated volunteers and financial grants from supporters.

Though "clinic day" is Wednesday at the Mercado, our attorneys represent clients every day at immigration court, in local district and circuit courts, and before a number of administrative and government agencies.

For more information about SWIRC please visit our website: www.detimmigrantcenter.com.
